The British-designed Sherman VC Firefly was an American M4A4 tank which was equipped with the powerful British 17-pdr high-velocity gun, providing vastly superior anti-tank capability compared to the standard 75 mm and 76 mm guns fitted on the M4/Sherman. While most Fireflies were of the Sherman VC type, other variations such as the Sherman IC, IIC, IIIC and IVC were also developed. During the Normandy and subsequent North-West European campaigns, the Firefly family played a crucial role as the most effective Allied tanks capable of engaging the Panther and Tiger tanks with comparable firepower. The installation of the 17-pdr gun in the Sherman turret required significant modifications, including turning the gun on its side and adapting it for left-hand loading, and providing new mounting, recoil, and elevating gear. Due to the long breech section of the gun, the radio had to be relocated to an armored box suspended from the rear of the turret, which also served to balance the long barrel section of the gun. To maximize space for ammunition storage, the bow machine-gun and its gunner’s position were removed, allowing for the accommodation of up to 78 rounds of main armament ammunition.
