M4 Sherman tank in burning Neumarkt Germany April 21, 1945

Sherman belonged to SGT Leniar (Lee) C. Covey of Stilwell, OK, and was one of two tanks that were destroyed in the battle for Neumarkt on April 21, 1945.

Both tanks were taken out by German 88mm anti-tank guns. The first tank was commanded by William J. Pospisil from Enid, OK, and was knocked out from the front. The second tank (posted here) was moving into position to fire on the German 88 that took out the first tank, and was itself taken out from the rear by another German 88.

Both men survived the attack and were honored for their bravery, but lost crew in both tanks. Bill was awarded a Purple Heart, and Lee was awarded a Bronze Star.
Thanks for the information to Mr Steven Covey.
