Intending to replace the TBF/TBM, Grumman designed a modified version of the Tigercat as a twin-engine attack carrier plane. Design 55, designated XTSF-1, then redesignated XTB2F-1, was proposed in December 1942 but never advanced beyond a one-sided wooden mock-up build at Bethpage. The project was canceled in January 1945 when it became apparent the aircraft would be too big and heavy for carrier operations.
