PBM-3R Mariner of the VR-8

PBM-3R VR-8

Unarmed transport version

Starting from the latter part of 1942, the PBM-3R began to be used as a transport version of the Mariner. In order to increase its carrying capacity, the defensive armament of the aircraft was removed entirely. This modification made the PBM-3R better suited for its role as a transport plane, allowing it to carry larger quantities of freight.
