Accommodation

  • Normal crew of six or an alternative crew of up to twelve.
  • Normal six-person crew: pilot, co-pilot, bombardier, flight engineer, navigator, and radio operator.
  • Extra crew members: three or four target-sighting men to fire the remotely-operated defensive guns, a radar operator, and a tail-gunner.
  • Crew housed in three pressurized sections: the nose section, the rear fuselage section (just aft of the rear bomb-bay), and the tail-gunner’s compartment.
  • Pilot, co-pilot, bombardier, radio operator, flight engineer, and navigator housed in the forward nose section.
  • Sighting personnel housed in the rear fuselage section.
  • Pressurized tunnel, 34 inches (0.6 m) in diameter, just above the tandem bomb-bays, connected the forward and rear compartments.
  • Tail-gunner remained in his compartment.
