To evaluate the feasibility of using the PBJ-1H (a navalized version of the B-25H Mitchell bomber) aboard aircraft carriers, significant modifications were made to one of the aircraft. Specifically, BuNo. 35277 was equipped with arresting gear and catapult bridle hooks to enable it to perform carrier operations, which were typically required for naval aircraft.

Carrier Trials:

  • Test Pilot: The trials were conducted by Lt. Cdr. H. S. Bottomley, who successfully carried out the first landing of the PBJ-1H on the USS Shangri-La (CV-38), an Essex-class aircraft carrier.
  • Successful Recoveries and Launches: Over a period of two days, a total of seventeen arrested recoveries and launches were completed. These tests demonstrated that the PBJ-1H could indeed be operated from an aircraft carrier, showcasing its versatility and adaptability for potential carrier-based operations.
