“PATCHED UP PIECE” started its journey as the first B-24J-1-CF manufactured at the Fort Worth plant. Its first flight occurred on September 14, 1943, and it was delivered to the Army Air Forces on October 2, 1943. Subsequently, it was modified for reconnaissance missions, outfitted with cameras and specialized equipment, becoming the first of 43 F-7A reconnaissance aircraft, which followed one XF-7 prototype and four F-7s.
The aircraft is notable for its service with the 20th Combat Mapping Squadron at Morotai on August 14, 1944, during a challenging mission. “PATCHED UP PIECE” is distinguished by its lack of national insignia on its fuselage and its unique nose art, created by Al Merkling, who was renowned for his artistic talents on B-24 bombers.
