Tempest Mk V JN730 was a significant early production aircraft of the Hawker Tempest fighter, primarily serving as a test and development airframe rather than for frontline operational service. JN730 was part of the first production batch of Tempest V aircraft, which ranged from JN729 to JN822. Notably, it was the second Tempest V production aircraft built. The very first machine from the production lines, JN729, flew on June 21, 1943.From its early days, JN730 was designated for development work and testing. Along with JN729 and JN731, it was specifically sent to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) at Boscombe Down in 1943 for further development. It spent its entire service life returned to Hawker for manufacturer’s trials and continued A&AEE testing. This indicates it was a dedicated experimental airframe, contributing to the refinement of the Tempest V design.
