In order to reduce the length of take-offs and landings, the Stirling was equipped with an exceedingly high undercarriage, which increased the angle of incidence of the wing to provide sufficient lift. However, this also rendered take-offs and landings difficult, as the aircraft tended to swing uncontrollably unless handled with great care. The Stirling’s main wheels were outfitted with the largest British tire produced by Dunlop that was implemented on any operational aircraft during World War II. Unfortunately, the undercarriage retraction motors were problematic and failed to fulfill their required duties.
