History of the Mosquito NF Mk 36
The NF.Mk.36 Mosquito was the final version of the Mosquito night-fighter delivered to the RAF, playing a crucial role in the service’s night defense during the post-war era. The NF.36 was almost identical to the NF.30, with the primary difference being the engine upgrade to Merlin 113s, each producing 1,690 hp, replacing the NF.30’s Merlin 73-series engines.
The first NF.36, serial number RK955, took its maiden flight in May 1945. Production commenced at the Leavesden factory in the same month, with the final unit, RL247, being delivered in January 1947. In total, 162 NF.36 aircraft were produced.
Deliveries to Fighter Command began in January 1946, and the NF.36 became the cornerstone of the UK’s night air defense until 1950, when it began to be replaced by jet-powered fighters. By October 1952, the last of these piston-engined night-fighters were phased out of Fighter Command’s inventory.
