Martin Maryland (French designation Martin 167 A-3) – American bomber from World War II used by France and United Kingdom.
In the middle of 1937 years USAAC ordered in several factories aircraft designs of the new twin-engine bomber, which could perform tasks assault and reconnaissance.
Among the companies that have designed the plane, was also Glenn L. Martin Company, which in July 1938 years presented the prototype marked Martin 167W (military designation XA-22). Used radial engines Pratt & Whitney R-1830-37 Twin Wasp (1100 hp each).
Martin 167 has been tested in flight, which went well. However, USAAC resigned from his purchase. New bomber interested in the French Air Force (Armée de l’air), which already in January 1939 ordered a batch of these aircraft, with the plane that was used radial engines Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9 with a power of 950 hp (700 kW). Instead of American machine guns were used Belgian FN Browning machine guns cal. 7.5 mm, and 820 kg bombs. The plane was factory designation Martin 167F and French military designation Martin 167A-3.
After the capitulation of France (25 June 1940) commissioned by France aircraft were transferred to Britain, where they began to be equipped with new engines Pratt & Whitney R-1830SC3-G Twin Wasp with a capacity of 1,050 hp (773 kW, 14-cylinder air-cooled engine driving three-bladed propellers). The aircraft received the new designation Martin Maryland Mk I.
In 1941 was developed another version of the plane marked as Martin Maryland Mk II, which differed from the previous use of more powerful engines Pratt & Whitney R-1830 S3C4-G of 1200 hp (883 kW) and the use of machine guns British production. It was the last version of the aircraft.
