German Stug IV
Sturmgeschütz IV (StuG IV, SdKfz 167) was a German assault gun of the Second World War.
After the success of the introduction of the Stug III assault guns inspired by the Panzer III tank design, the Germans decided in 1943 to develop similar construction based on the Panzer IV tank chassis. The StuG IV had a superstructure which differed only in details from that of the StuG 40 Ausf F/8 gun. The only modification was the position of the driver’s seat which was placed in the armoured box compartment right in front of the hull’s main superstructure. Later, the Stug IV guns received a remote-controlled machine gun mounted on the superstructure roof – on the loader’s hatch (so-called Rundumsfeuer MG 34) and a grenade launcher for protection against enemy infantry (so-called Nahverteidigungswaffe). Subsequent modifications applied in the course of the production: the Schürzen side armor was later replaced with the so-called Thoma Schurzen made from steel mesh, the barrel’s support was changed, the armour of the driver’s compartment was reinforced (+30 mm), the frontal armour was reinforced with concrete (on the left and the right side of the gun barrel), the Zimmerit paste was used until September 1944. The StuG IV was characterized by its good traction control, the dependable 75 mm StuK40 L/48 gun and a low silhouette.
Production: 1108 guns + 31 conversions.
