Panther number 331, Italy

During the Italian campaign of 1944, Allied infantrymen stopped to inspect a captured PzKpfw Panther Ausf D2 with great interest. The tank had a commander’s cupola with a lifting and swinging hatch, but no hull machine-gun mounting. One noteworthy feature was the Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine paste coating the exterior of the tank, a German attempt to prevent magnetic mines from sticking to the armor. Additionally, a 75mm projectile was observed resting on the glacis plate of the tank.
