German single-seat fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109, often called Me 109. Design: Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (later: Messerschmitt AG)
Total production: 33984 aircrafts
Design and Structure (Bf 109G)
- Wings:
- Low-wing cantilever monoplane configuration.
- All-metal single-spar structure with flush-riveted stressed-skin metal covering.
- Outer wings are attached to the fuselage at three points, designed to handle torsional loads.
- The entire trailing edge is hinged, with the outer sections functioning as slotted ailerons and the inner sections as camber-changing flaps.
- Equipped with engine coolant radiators on each side of the fuselage, integrated within the under surface of the wings. The cooling system involves airflow management via flaps controlled thermostatically.
- Handley Page auto-slots on the outer portion of the leading edges and attachment points for additional armament, such as underslung guns or 21 cm rocket projectile tubes.
- Fuselage:
- Oval-section light metal monocoque structure, constructed in two halves with top and bottom longitudinal joints.
- The fuselage incorporates a combination of longitudinal stringers and vertical panels, some flanged to form “Z”-frames, and has a smooth outer surface due to flush riveting.
- Tail Unit:
- Cantilever monoplane type with balanced rudder and elevators.
- The construction varies, with metal framework and fabric-covered movable surfaces; later sub-types may feature wooden tail-units to conserve light metal.
Landing Gear
- Type: Retractable with a narrow track, raised upwards and outwards by hydraulic jacks. Includes auxiliary manual raising gear and hydraulic wheel brakes.
- Tail-wheel: Semi-retractable, often locked in the down position.
Power Plant
- Engine: One Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine (various sub-types) – a twelve-cylinder inverted Vee liquid-cooled engine mounted on magnesium-alloy bearers.
- Features:
- MW 50 or GM 1 power-boosting equipment, depending on the engine sub-type.
- VDM electrically-operated constant-speed airscrew (9 ft. 10 in. in diameter).
- Ducted coolant radiators under the wings.
- Fuel stored in a rubber cell in a plywood box behind and under the pilot’s seat, with additional auxiliary drop tanks possible.
Accommodation
- Cockpit: Enclosed, located over the wing with a hood that hinges to starboard and sliding panels in the sides and roof. Some variants feature a pressurized cockpit for enhanced protection and operational ceiling. Bullet-resistant windscreen and armor plating provide additional pilot protection.
