The Ju 88A-4/Torp was a torpedo-bomber variant of the Ju 88A-4, specifically adapted for anti-ship operations. This modification was part of the Luftwaffe’s effort to develop a capable maritime strike aircraft that could effectively engage Allied naval forces.

Key Features and Modifications:

  • Torpedo Armament: The most significant modification in the Ju 88A-4/Torp was its ability to carry and launch torpedoes. The first successful tests of this variant were conducted on July 16, 1941, using a modified Ju 88D-1 equipped with two LT F5b torpedoes. Following these successful trials, an order was placed for seventy PVC 1000B torpedo launchers. These launchers were mounted under the center wing section of the aircraft. The torpedo-launching device, known as the LT-Anlage, was installed on the right side of the front fuselage, easily recognizable by its elongated, streamlined fairing.

  • Removal of Dive Brakes: Unlike other Ju 88 variants designed for dive-bombing, the Ju 88A-4/Torp did not have dive brakes. This was because the aircraft’s primary role had shifted to torpedo bombing rather than dive-bombing.

  • Fixed Armament: To enhance its offensive capabilities, many Ju 88A-4/Torp aircraft were armed with a fixed MG FF 20-mm cannon, typically installed in the nose of the aircraft. This cannon had a supply of 180 rounds and was intended for use against both aerial and surface targets.

  • Radar Equipment: Some of the Ju 88A-4/Torp aircraft were equipped with the FuG 200 “Hohentwiel” radar, a device with an 80 km range that was used for detecting and targeting marine vessels. This radar significantly enhanced the aircraft’s effectiveness in maritime operations, allowing it to locate and engage enemy ships even in poor visibility conditions.

  • Testing and Operational Use: One particular Ju 88A-4/Torp (Werknummer 740, BF+YT) underwent testing at the Gdynia (then known as Gotenhafen) testing area. This aircraft was equipped with the experimental L10 glide torpedoes. However, the trials were not continued after the aircraft crashed, halting further development in this direction.
