Key Features and Modifications:
Three-Seat Configuration:
- The Ju 88A-17 had a crew of three, a reduction from the standard four-person crew found in other Ju 88 variants. This change likely aimed to reduce weight and streamline the aircraft for its specialized role as a torpedo bomber.
Omission of Ventral Cupola:
- Like some other specialized Ju 88 variants, the A-17 did not have the ventral cupola, which was typically used for additional armament or reconnaissance equipment. This modification helped reduce weight and improve aerodynamics.
Torpedo Armament:
- The primary offensive load of the Ju 88A-17 consisted of torpedoes. It could carry two LT F5b or LT F5w torpedoes, with the latter being an Italian-licensed version of the F5b. This made the A-17 an effective anti-ship aircraft, capable of launching torpedo attacks on naval targets.
FuG 200 “Hohentweil” Radar:
- Some Ju 88A-17 aircraft were fitted with the FuG 200 “Hohentweil” radar system. This radar allowed for the detection of ships at sea, providing a significant advantage in locating and engaging targets during maritime operations. The radar had an approximate range of 80 km, which made it effective for over-water reconnaissance and targeting.
