Bf 109G-6 of the JG53, Mediterranean Theater of Operations

A significant upgrade from the G-4, the G-6 featured a more potent armament, replacing the 7.92mm machine guns with heavier 13mm machine guns. 1 To accommodate the larger cartridges and their ejection mechanisms, distinctive bulges were added to the aircraft’s nose, altering its profile. Often seen equipped with underwing cannon pods for engaging heavy bombers, the G-6 could also be armed with anti-aircraft rockets. However, these additional weapons significantly hampered the aircraft’s maneuverability. Like its predecessors, the G-6 retained the larger wheels and fixed tailwheel. Both the G-2, G-4, and early G-6 models employed the Revi C 12/C and C 12/D gunsights, the latter specifically designed for bombing and fixed gunnery.
