Aircraft Markings and Color Schemes
P-47C/D Thunderbolts (February 1943 – February 1944)
- Colors: Standard Dark Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Gray undersurfaces.
- Markings:
- Cocarde:
- Wings: 45 inches in diameter.
- Fuselage: 35 inches in diameter.
- Identification Numbers: Yellow radio call-numbers, 7½ inches by 5 inches.
- February 1943 Updates:
- White type identity markings were added for Thunderbolts.
- Last two digits of the serial number were painted on the fuselage forward of the cocarde (approx. 20 inches high in white) and often additionally on the lower cowling lip in black.
- Enlarged national insignia (59 inches) under both wings, and a 2-inch wide yellow band encircled the fuselage cocarde.
- April 1943 Updates:
- Squadron code letters were updated: QP for the 334th FS, WD for the 335th FS, and VF for the 336th FS.
- Codes were painted in 24-inch white block characters, forward of the cocarde on both sides of the fuselage, with the individual letter aft.
- The individual letter was also painted in black under the cowling lip on many aircraft.
- July 1943 Updates:
- Revised national insignia caused the individual aircraft letters to be repainted nearer the tail due to the added ‘bar.’
- Some P-47Ds received from air depots did not have the national insignia relocated and had all three identification letters grouped together forward of the ‘star and bar,’ separated by a hyphen.
