P-51D 44-63822 “Lil Butch” #150 of the 47th Fighter Squadron 15th Fighter Group Iwo Jima 12 April 1945

For the group markings of the aircraft:

  • 45th Fighter Squadron: The aircraft featured a green/black/green spinner, with a green-outlined black angled band on the fin and rudder. The side code, a two-digit number, was placed forward of the national insignia (star and bar) in black.

  • 47th Fighter Squadron: The spinner was painted black, with a nose band and fuselage band outlined in yellow. The fin and rudder displayed an inverted black triangle outlined in yellow. The aircraft had a three-digit side number in black located forward of the fuselage’s star and bar. Wing bands were yellow outlined in yellow.

  • 78th Fighter Squadron: The spinner was yellow, followed by black. The fin and rudder had a yellow band with a black border below. Wingtips were painted yellow. The aircraft featured a three-digit side code in black, positioned forward of the star and bar.

All aircraft were delivered with an unpainted finish, except for the olive drab anti-glare panel.
